Kakadu Plum Co. celebrates ancient Indigenous superfoods

Kakadu Plum, or Gubinge, our native Australian superfood, has long been considered a gift of the Dreamtime. For centuries, there has been belief that Kakadu Plum and other native foods can be medicine for many people

Tahlia, what is Kakadu Plum Co?

The value and magic of native Indigenous bush food has been generally unknown to non-Indigenous people for years. Now, Kakadu Plum Co. wants to bring awareness about the importance and value of not only Kakadu Plum, but the Australian Native Food Industry as a whole.

Can you tell us how you started your business?

Tahlia observed everyday Australians opting for international superfood varieties for health benefits. Knowing instinctively about Australian bush foods, she discovered the Kakadu Plum and learnt that it had the highest source of vitamin C of any plant in the world. She was surprised that so many Australians did not know about this product and made it her mission to begin to educate and inspire others about this incredible fruit, Australian bush ingredients, Indigenous culture and that everything we need is grown in our own backyard. #theplumpower and Kakadu Plum Co. was born

What would you say has been your biggest challenge and how did you over come it?

Many Australian bush foods are seasonal and wild-harvested, meaning that supply can be an issue. One of our biggest challenges is planning ahead to assure we have supply when needed. With this comes a cashflow challenge – needing to pay for stock well in advance. We try and not over capitalise, rather being conservative and working with customers personally as opposed to trying to fit in with what everyone wants. I made the mistake of trying to please everyone in my previous business. Now, I know, I can’t always please everyone when they need something, now, and I work on a much leaner and manageable system.

What is the one thing that has had the biggest impact to your success?

I am incredibly humbled to be connected to Traditional Owners and Indigenous community leaders and seeing the success on the ground, in community, each harvest. Their guidance, wisdom, teachings and encouragement has driven me to this day, impacting me daily in how I make my decisions. It is their story I am driven to share and continue for others to also appreciate. Success is seeing non-Indigenous people embrace our traditional culture everyday and come on this movement with me through the use of our products and continued story telling.
